The Wire: AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan Sent to Four-Day Police Custody in Delhi Waqf Board Case

The Anti-Corruption Bureau had told the court that Khan had received Rs 4 crore "ill-gotten money" and wanted his custody to "confront him (about) how he received this money".

New Delhi: Delhi’s Rouse Avenue court on Saturday, September 17, sent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan, arrested in connection with alleged irregularities pertaining to the Delhi Waqf Board, to four days of police custody, Indian Express reported.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) told the court that Khan had received Rs 4 crore “ill-gotten money” and sought 14-day custody. However, the court allowed only four days of ACB custody.

ACB’s counsel, additional public prosecutor Atul Kumar Shrivastava, told the court that the agency would need Khan’s custody to “confront him (about) how he received this money”.

Shrivastava revealed that ACB had relied upon a dairy that investigating sleuths recovered from Khan that allegedly recorded several money transactions confirming the receipt of “ill-gotten money”. He specifically read out an entry which said Khan had received Rs 4 crore in cash, besides adding that transactions were also recorded in Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana and Uttrakhand.

According to NDTV, the ACB counsel also said, “Four teams were formed and when that team reached for investigation, they were attacked.” He also submitted to the court video footage which purportedly showed one of the investigating officers being heckled by a crowd. Police also registered a case against unidentified people for allegedly obstructing the ACB team from discharging its duties.

To allegation of assault against probe agency officials, advocate Rahul Mehra, appearing for Khan, said Khan was not present there when the attack happened as he was in the custody of the ACB. “Cannot say in the court that Amanatullah Khan assaulted him,” he said.
