NEW DELHI – The police in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha are reported to have mercilessly beaten up six Muslim men and allegedly tortured them whole night on suspicion that they were going to slaughter an ox.
The victims – Waseem, Arshad, Faizan, Abdul Qadir, Waseem Akram and Guddu are residents of Amroha’s Muradabadi Gate in the Kotwali area.
In their complaint filed on Saturday, they said that on Friday around 10 PM, they were guarding a mango garden. The in-charge of Muradabadi Gate police station, Sandeep Chaudhry, came to the garden along with police personnel Styandera, Maneesh and others and took them to the police station. The cops thrashed them in the van and then tortured them whole night at the police station. The victims also alleged that they were subjected to third degree torture. They also alleged that the policemen were drunk. After whole night ordeal, the policemen freed them saying they were innocent.
Waseem, one of the victims, told local media that during the course of beating the policemen were saying that even if they kill him at the most they will be transferred.
Waseem who sports a beard alleged that police inspector Sandeep and Satyendra held him by his beard and demanded to confess that he slaughtered the ox.
On Sunday, they reached the office of Amroha SP to demand action against the erring policemen. The SP have assured medical checkup of the victims and action against the policemen if found guilty. On Twitter, the Amroha police said that an investigation is being done into the matter.
Inspector I.P. Sharma said that the police had got a tip off of ox slaughter. When the police reached the spot, they found ox but the trader ran away. The police saw some men sitting on the way the traders ran away. Sharma claimed they were interrogated on suspicion and allowed to go. He rejected the claim of torture.
