NEW DELHI— After the government informed the parliament that no person has been arrested so far in the JNU violence of last year allegedly perpetrated by members of right wing groups, the student activists of the varsity have questioned the government’s intent in how they have taken so long investigating the case.
Afreen Fatima, a student at JNU who also fought the election for the students Union in 2019 asked why they are not taking any action as he demanded a prompt police action into the case. She also claimed that the police was using dual approach while dealing with students Jamia Millia and Aligarh Muslim University as compared to rigtwing ABVP students group. “They were not even touched by the police,” she said.
The Media investigation has revealed that ABVP confessed to committing violence in JNU campus on 5 January 2020 and yet the police have failed to nab even a single culprit.
The ABVP members were seen chanting Jai Shree Ram during the violence, Fatima siad.
“This should not be seen as an attack on JNU only because the main targets were the minority students (Muslims & Kashmiri students ) particularly, People forget sometimes that whenever Right-wing attacks, their targets are Muslims & Kashmiri bodies,” she said referring to press statement of Aishe Ghosh, President – JNUSU who was also attacked by the goons, where she said when she was injured, the culprits were saying she shouldn’t be harmed. “This means that they came here to target a particular community,” asserted Fatima.
Apeksha, a PhD candidate at JNU and also Student Union Counsellor said that they know the answer for failure of police to arrest the culprits despite clear evidence.
“The attack on JNU was an act of collusion between the Delhi Police, and ABVP but It was also backed by the government.
“They have registered 3 FIRs but no action is still taken,” she said. “I even filed a complaint when on 4th January I was injured but it was not converted into an FIR.”
Apeksha said today they are talking In Lok-Sabha saying nobody was arrested, next year they’ll say nothing has happened.
She also lashed out at the varsity administration for failing to initiate an enquiry despite an inbuilt mechanism to investigate matters.
“When we protest, the Chief-Proctor starts inquiry and punishes the student activists but on the other hand when this violence took place, many were injured including the president of Student Union & Professors then why there is no inquiry and punishment,” she asked.
She said Delhi Police was giving protection to the attackers while “in the case of Jamia Delhi Police was directly involved in the violence.”
She demanded complaints should be converted into FIRs and existing evidence taken into consideration.
