New Delhi: A Delhi court recently acquitted two persons accused of rioting, pelting bricks and throwing acid and other offences in a case related to northeast Delhi riots.

The court of additional sessions judge Pulastya Pramachala stated that there was no incriminating evidence against them as the testimony of the “sole witness” of the prosecution failed to incriminate the accused persons. The testimony of the same witness said that he did not say anything about witnessing the throwing of acid from the premises of a nearby school, nor did he specify the particular mob which committed the offence, it added.

The court was hearing a case against Asraf Ali and Parvej who were accused of being a part of a riotous mob that attacked a Sashastra Seema Bal battalion with glass bottles, acid and bricks from the roofs of houses on February 25, 2020. Two SSB personnel were injured in the attack. The case was registered against the duo at Karawal Nagar police station.

The court further noted that in the absence of proof of the duo’s involvement in the incident, the evidence for the offence under Indian Penal Code’s Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) hadto be ignored.
