Dalits denied haircut, officials probe charges (Times Of India)

By TNN

Tenkasi: Dalit villagers in Ayyanarkulam village, Tenkasi district, have alleged that the local hairdresser refused to serve them following pressure from the maravar community, who threatened to boycott his shop if he served dalits.

The aggrieved dalit villagers did not file any police complaint, but verbally communicated their concerns to the village administrative officer (VAO), Santhakumar.

Around 1,000 families are residing in Ayyanarkulam including 50 from dalit communities like arunthathiyars and paraiyars. The residents used to go for hairdressing to neighbouring village Nallur which is around three kilometres away. Two months ago, a hairdresser from Nagercoil returned to his native village to open a salon.
