Dalit man kills self for land rights

Rajkot: A Dalit man committed suicide near Dhari Prant office on Wednesday evening by consuming poison. According to Amreli police Lakhman Sarikada (48), who died during treatment at night, took the extreme step after his agricultural land was allegedly not regularized by the revenue department.

Sarikada came in a bus to Dhari Prant office on Wednesday evening, where he consumed some poisonous substance. He was taken to the Dhari hospital first from where he was shifted to Amreli Civil Hospital where he died during treatment, said the police

Police said that Sarikada’s father received some Santhini land in Kotda village of Khambha taluka for cultivation from the district authority. The government provides landless scheduled caste community people some agriculture land to cultivate. This land, categorized later as ‘Shree Sarkar’ in 1966, however, was taken back by the government. The family of the deceased is still cultivating on the same land but without ownership rights over the land. They have been fighting to get their rights but for some reason, the entry was not registered in the revenue record.

Amreli city police registered a case of accidental death and started investigation.
