Dalit held for theft in thana dies in custody, five cops suspended

AGRA: A 30-year-old Dalit sanitation worker, Arun Valmiki, died in police custody on Tuesday, a day after he was nabbed by the Agra police in connection with theft of Rs 25 lakh from Jagdishpura police station. His relatives have accused policemen of torturing him during interrogation.

A case of murder has been registered against “unidentified police personnel”. Five cops, including the police chowki in charge and an inspector of the crime branch, were suspended on Wednesday. Earlier , after the theft was first reported, six cops had been suspended for “negligence”. Additional DG (Agra zone) Rajeev Krishna told TOI that Arun had “confessed” to his involvement in the crime. “He was taken to his house to recover the money and Rs 15 lakh was seized from there,” he said. “But all of a sudden, Arun felt unwell and died on the way to hospital.”

Police said a magistrate inquiry is being conducted.
