Chikkamagaluru: Right-wing group barges into Christian prayer meet, alleges illegal conversion

Bajrang Dal members barged into a Christian prayer meet in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru on Sunday, May 29, alleging illegal religious conversion.

Members of the right-wing group Bajrang Dal, barged into a Christian prayer meet in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru on Sunday, May 29, alleging illegal religious conversion being carried out at a private hotel.

The right-wing group members alleged that over 50 people were being converted into Christianity. The incident occurred on Chikkamagaluru’s Barline road.

Meanwhile, the police rushed to the spot and inquired about the allegations of illegal conversion.

Earlier this month, a Christian couple was arrested by the Madikeri district police over allegations of forced religious conversion.

Chaos prevailed at Manchalli village of Madikeri district as members of the Bajrang Dal barged into a house belonging to a man named Paniyeravar A Mutha and questioned the motive of a Christian couple, who were inside the house.

Based on the complaint filed by a man, an FIR was lodged under IPC section 295 (A). The accused were produced before the court and sent to judicial custody.

The incident occurred on the same day an ordinance on the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill (2021) or commonly known as Anti-Conversion Law came into effect.

Right-wing group, Sri Ram Sene had said that it was preparing a list of what it claimed to be illegal places of worship in the state.

The organisation’s chief Pramod Muthalik had alleged that people had converted their homes into churches and such places were being used to carry out religious conversions.

“We have so far prepared a list of about 500 such places of worship operating in houses, marriage halls and community buildings in four districts while work is on in other districts. We will submit it to the government by this month-end,” Muthalik had said.
