The Delhi High Court on Thursday granted bail to three accused in the murder case of Intelligence Bureau (IB) staffer Ankit Sharma, who was one of the 53 people killed in the 2020 Northeast Delhi riots.

A single-judge bench of Justice Navin Chawla granted bail to the trio — Shoiab Alam alias Bobby, Gulfam, and Javed — while denying bail to the fourth accused, Nazim.

Regarding Alam and Gulfam, the HC said that the prosecution had relied on the testimony of a prosecution witness, Pradeep Verma, wherein Verma had in his “statement recorded before the trial court” that he could not identify the two men.

With respect to another prosecution witness, the HC noted that he — in his statement recorded before the trial court — had not spoken about Sharma’s murder, but only about Shoiab and Gulfam being “part of the mob indulging in riotous activities”.

About Javed, the HC noted that Verma, the prosecution witness, had said that the applicant was a “part of the mob which was pelting stones and indulging in rioting”; the witness had, however, “not ascribed any role to the applicant in the murder of the deceased”.
