Human rights group MASUM has written to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take immediate action over an incident of hate crime by a Border Security Force constable.
According to a formal complaint filed by MASUM, Hasanur Gazi, a known businessman from Hakimpur in North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, was subjected to verbal abuse, physical assault and religious hatred by the BSF personnel at Tarali Mini BOP on 09 October 2024.
Gazi, a resident of Tarali village and owner of a cycle and auto repair shop, claims he was stopped and assaulted by a BSF constable, identified as Kuldeep while returning home on his motorcycle.
The constable allegedly targeted Gazi’s Muslim identity, pulling his beard and making derogatory remarks about his faith.
The incident reportedly escalated when the constable dismantled Gazi’s motorcycle and threatened him with false accusations under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The constable allegedly refused to relent despite Gazi presenting valid government identification and documentation.
Gazi later lodged complaints with local authorities, including the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Swarupnagar and the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Basirhat Police District, but has received no response to date.
