NEW DELHI: Clashes erupted between two groups in Thane over the
immersion of Ganesh idols early Wednesday, leading to stone-pelting
and police intervention, according to an official.
Joint Commissioner of Police Dnyaneshwar Chavan reported that the
incident took place around 12:30 am in Bhiwandi. “As a large crowd gathered at Vanzarpatti Naka amid the clash, police officials were deployed to diffuse the tension and maintain law and order,” Chavan said.
Videos showing the confrontation, including stone-pelting and police response, have surfaced on social media. The dispute started when two community groups both wanted to immerse their Ganesh idol first, leading to the fight.
Some individuals have been detained, and cases are being registered, the official confirmed. Several policemen and participants were injured, though the extent of their injuries is still being compiled.
To ensure peace, additional police units, including personnel from the State Reserve Police, have been deployed.
