LUCKNOW: The challenge to the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, and the claim for ownership of the Gyanvapi complex in Varanasi and Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura will feature prominently in the central Margdarshak Mandal meeting of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh on Jan 24.
“These two issues are the most important ones in the current situation. VHP will discuss these issues and decide the future course of action,” VHP international president Alok Kumar told TOI on Wednesday.
Kumar said that the VHP was bound by opinions and would work according to the directions of seers and the sentiments of the Hindu community.
Sources indicated that the VHP was planning to pass a full-fledged resolution on the subject which could intensify the clamour around Kashi and Mathura.
The VHP’s stance gains importance against the backdrop of Mathura Shahi Eidgah Committee moving the Supreme Court seeking to close the Centre’s right to file a reply on a plea challenging the constitutional validity of the said Act, which preserves the religious character of places of worship as they were on Aug 15, 1947. The Act was passed by Parliament on Sep 18, 1991.
