Uttar Pradesh Police on Sunday night arrested Muslim activist Javed Mohammed for a Facebook post he shared on Sambhal killings that led to the death of six Muslims. Mohammed’s post is reportedly critical of police firing on Muslims protesting the survey of Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal.
Police made him delete the post after he was arrested from his rented house in UP’s Prayagraj under Sections 126, 135, and 117 of BNS.
The vocal critic of the UP government received bail on Monday but has to spend a day in jail after failing to furnish a bail bond along with two sureties. He is expected to be released on Tuesday after fulfilling the bail conditions.
The 58-year-old was accused of being the “mastermind” of a protest in his hometown, Prayagraj, formerly Allahabad, against BJP leaders who made derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammed. He was arrested from his house on 10 June 2022.
Mohammed had spent 21 months in jail before being released on bail in March this year.
His wife and daughter were “illegally detained” by police on the night of his arrest. They were released after getting assurance that they wouldn’t go home or stop the demolition of their house the next day.
Javed Mohammed refuted all the allegations against him. He also challenged the demolition of his house in court.
