Tripura lynching: Another Muslim man’s body found after confession of accused

The death toll in the Hindu mob lynching incident in Tripura’s Khowai district on 20 June has risen to four with the recovery of the body of a missing Muslim man.

The body of Salim Hussain was found buried in a wooded area in North Maharanipur on Saturday afternoon, The Hindu reported.

The police said that the body was found on basis of the confession of the accused persons.

The police has arrested three men as the investigation progressed. Sources said the police swung into action after the State government asked the police to act tough against the accused.

“We have exhumed the body and sent it to for post-mortem,” the police officer said.

On 20 June morning, three youth, identified as Billai Mia (27), Zayed Hussain (28), and Saiful Islam (21), were branded cattle thieves by a Hindu mob before the trio were brutally beaten up and lynched by the mob in Khowai district in Tripura.

Billal, Zayed and Saiful were residents of Sunamura in Sepahijala district.

Families of deceased spoke to Maktob, denied the claims of cattle theft and demanded strong action against culprits.

Though the incident happened with the police around, no FIR was filed and they later took Suo Motu. Ironically, the police also registered a cattle theft case against the trio. A preliminary investigation has found that 30-40 villagers had gathered to lynch the Muslim men.

Opposition parties, Muslim organisations and rights groups have condemned the brutal killing of Muslim men and called for police action against Hindu fringe groups in the state.
