‘Tortured’ by cops, Dalit boy dies in Uttar Pradesh (Times of India)

A 16-year-old Dalit boy detained by Kheri police for alleged theft died in hospital after purported torture. His family and villagers demanded an FIR against the officers involved. An investigation identified negligence by three constables. Doctors attributed the cause of death to septicaemia and found no injuries.

BAREILLY: A 16-year-old Dalit boy, picked up by Kheri police on Sept 3 for alleged theft and subsequently “tortured”, died in hospital in Lakhimpur Kheri on Saturday, reports Kanwardeep Singh.

Demanding an FIR against “guilty cops” who allegedly “offered money to the family not to raise the matter”, the boy’s kin along with residents of Sisawan Kala village blocked a state highway outside the local police station for several hours.

SHO (Fardhan) Rajesh Kumar initiated a probe and three constables were purportedly found “negligent ” and “appropriate action was recommended”.

SP Ganesh Prasad Saha told TOI: “The cause of death was septicaemia and doctors didn’t find any injury. “
