COIMBATORE: The Podanur police arrested a Hindu Munnani functionary for attacking three Christian preachers on Saturday night.
The arrested person was identified as P Uthaman, 31, of East Devendra Street at Nanjundapuram, Sungam area urban general secretary of Hindu Munnani.
Uthaman attacked A Spendi Labersan, 33, of Fisherman Colony at Vellaipatti in Tuticorin, Rajasekar and Selvam, police said. “The trio had visited Nanjundapuram around 6.30pm on Saturday to meet Labersan’s wife’s relative Prakash. They were wearing shirts with Bible verses. When they reached Nanjundapuram flyover, Labersan asked some locals about Prakash’s whereabouts. Meanwhile, Uthaman, who reached there, confronted them. He accused them of spreading Christianity in the locality and thrashed them. He also threatened them with dire consequences if they preach in the area,” a police officer said.
Based on Labersan’s complaint, the Podanur police registered a case against Uthaman and arrested him. He was remanded in judicial custody and was lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison on Sunday.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Hindu Munnani cadres besieged the Podanur police station on Sunday and condemned police for arresting Uthaman.
