Assam Police resorted to firing during an eviction drive in the Sonapur area on the outskirts of Guwahati city on Thursday. Local activists say that at least two persons died in the police firing when the people protested the demolition of their food grains.

In the incident, scores of protesters and police personnel, including the circle officer of Sonapur sustained injuries. Shahjahan, whose son has been hit by a bullet told Maktoob that at least 17-18 dwellers were wounded in the police firing.

Earlier on 21 August, the Muslim residents were evicted from their homes on charges of encroaching into government land. Evictions were going relatively peacefully during the last three days.

Following the eviction, the people stayed near their demolished homes in Ward 1 and Ward 2 of Kachutali village. Assam Police warned the people to vacate the place entirely within two days.

Confrontations between police and protesters escalated today when the bulldozers were destroying the makeshift houses and the food grains they had kept near a lane in the village.
