In Bageshwar Dham, Chhatrapur, Madhya Pradesh, shopkeepers are now mandated to display nameplates outside their establishments following a diktat from Hinudtava priest Dhirendra Krishna Shastri. He said that the rule aims to ensure clear identification of shopkeepers and is not intended to target any particular religious group.

Shastri stated, “We have no issues with Ram or Rahman. Our concern is with those who are misleading. Recently, similar regulations were introduced in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, mandating shop names on the premises, especially during Kanwar Yatra.”

He said, “Stall owners, tea vendors, and other shopkeepers should put up nameplates. We will discuss this in our committee meeting and instruct our officials to enforce it. It is important for every shop in the dham to display a nameplate.”

Shastri said, “We want people to know who is affiliated with Ram and who with Rahman. We have no problem with Ram or Rahman, but we do have a problem with deceitful individuals. Therefore, there should be no issue in displaying names. This will prevent the corruption of faith among the visiting devotees.”

He warned that compliance is mandatory: “This is my order. Ensure nameplates are installed within 10 days, or else legal action will be taken by the dham committee. We will coordinate with the administration and provide a memorandum. Do not say later that you were not informed.”

The move follows similar decisions in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, where the opposition has criticized the mandates, leading the matter to the Supreme Court for further hearings. Despite this, shopkeepers in Uttar Pradesh have begun complying with the new regulations.

BJP MLA Ramesh Mendola from Indore has written to Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, advocating for the nameplate rule. Mendola argued that having a nameplate instils pride and is the right of customers to know whom they are dealing with. He has requested that the directive be implemented across Madhya Pradesh to foster this sense of pride among traders.
