The Supreme Court has issued a notice on the contempt petition filed against the bulldozer action on the mosque in Kushinagar.

The apex court has also sought a reply from the Uttar Pradesh government and administrative officials within two weeks.

The Supreme Court was hearing a contempt petition filed against Uttar Pradesh authorities for demolition action at a mosque in Kushinagar, allegedly in violation of its judgment dated 13 November 2024, which restrained demolition actions across the country without prior notice and an opportunity for a hearing.

The Supreme Court, while issuing a show cause notice, asked the concerned officials to respond as to why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them.

The apex court, while hearing the contempt petition, also ordered that until further notice, there shall be no demolition of the structure.

A portion of Madni Mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district, which, according to the petition, was allegedly built on ‘encroached’ land, was demolished by bulldozers earlier this month.

Earlier on February 9, a portion of the Madni Masjid was demolished with bulldozers, which has sparked concerns.
