Christian pastor and his family targeted in Uttarakhand state after being accused of carrying out conversions

A right-wing Hindu activist and companions have been accused of storming a prayer meeting and attacking worshippers in northern India’s Uttarakhand state, where a sweeping anti-conversion law is in force.

About two dozen people attacked the meeting, accusing Pastor Rajesh Bomi and his family of carrying out religious conversions.

The prayer service was being conducted in the pastor’s home in the state capital Dehradun.

The pastor’s wife Dixa Paul filed a police complaint in which she identified Vijender Thapa, a right-wing Hindu activist and several others as attackers.

“They entered our home and started beating us, accusing us of converting people to Christianity. There were 15 people at the prayer service,” she said in the complaint.

They damaged the furniture and the music system and used abusive language, she added.

Pastor Bomi’s brother-in-law and father-in-law were receiving treatment at a hospital in Dehradun, she said.
