The police in Pune on Tuesday refused permission for a scheduled event to release a book on the killing of Ishrat Jahan in an encounter.

Wahid Shaikh, the author of the book titled Ishrat Jahan Encounter, told Clarion India that the book was successfully launched in Mumbai last week. But the Pune administration was not giving permission to hold the event. “Now, I’m in Pune. I came here to attend the book release event,” he said.

Shaikh said that they had booked Azam Campus for the book release event. But, for some unspecified reasons, the campus cancelled the booking. Then, they booked Savitribai Phule Auditorium. It also decided to cancel the booking.

On Tuesday, the police in Pune issued a notice to the organisers asking them not to hold the event.

Former High Court judge Justice B.G. Kolse Patil, former IG of Maharashtra S.M. Mushrif, former IG Maharashtra CID, advocate M.M. Sayyed, President of Kul Jamati Tanzeem, Pune, advocate Asim Sarode, a human rights lawyer and other prominent people were scheduled to address the event.

“It took me two years to write the book after gathering all the information related to the case,” Shaikh told Clarion India.

“In Ishrat Jahan’s case, all police officials who were arrested were let off because the government did not give permission to prosecute them. No one was punished in the case. An innocent girl was killed. My aim was to bare all facts related to the case,” said Shaikh.

Shaikh said his findings are similar to those of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Ishrat was detained, and killed and her body was thrown away in the night. It was claimed that she was a suicide bomber who was killed in an encounter. She had planned to kill then chief minister and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Shaikh revealed that the CBI had filed two chargesheets in the case. But the second chargesheet went missing from the court. It was about Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials. This chargesheet was not given even to Ishrat’s counsel.
