A large demonstration was held in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad on Tuesday against the renaming of the district as Sambhajinagar. It was attended by AIMIM MP Imtiyaz Jaleel.

The protest was called by Aurangabad Namantar Virodhi Sangharsh Samiti, an organisation formed to oppose renaming of the district.

Jaleel slammed the NCP and Congress for not taking a stand against the Uddhav Thackeray-led coalition government’s decision to rename Aurangabad. He took a jibe at Sharad Pawar for his comments, in which he said he was not aware of the decision and it was announced at the last moment. Jaleel called Pawar’s comments “laughable”.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led government, its last cabinet meeting on 29 June, had approved proposals to rename Aurangabad as as Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv.
