NUH: Till July 2023, Mohd Talim ran a photocopy shop. He now rents out a small piece of footpath to bike riders who need space to park and earns Rs 10 per bike.

On a good day, his daily income touches around Rs 300, which is a fourth of what the 20-year-old made from his photocopier business.

This parking area is opposite the remains of shops near Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government College and Hospital, one of which was Talim’s, that were demolished a year ago in the aftermath of the Nuh riots on July 31.

“This parking space is my only means of survival. We are seven brothers, and each of us had a shop in this complex, which was demolished.

We lost our livelihoods and now, we are trying to get back on our feet with whatever resources are left,” Talim said on Thursday.
Around 350 structures – among them slum settlements, hotels and shops – were razed in a four-day drive in Nuh from Aug 3-6, 2023.
