Nearly 1,000 homes in Sambhal remain locked as residents leave town fearing arrests after violence

After violence broke out in Sambhal over a survey of Sambhal Jama Masjid, nearly 1,000 homes remain locked as residents were forced to flee fearing arrests or action by the police.

The locked homes are in Hindpura, Kot Garvi Nakhasa and Deepa Sarai areas. A team of police is sent to verify the information they received that many residents are in Delhi.

“Around 1,000 houses remain locked as residents have not returned. We are consistently assuring that no action will be taken against the innocent,” stated Krishna Kumar, Sambhal Superintendent of Police.

Some locals have displayed on their doors about the reasons why they are away from home. One local displayed a medical report with a note that the family is in Delhi to get the cancer treatment done of a family member.

Reports suggest that meanwhile the UP government is evaluating the cost of damage that happened during the violence. A senior officer said that notices will be sent to the accused for the recovery of the damages after a charge sheet is filed next week.

Until now, the Sambhal police have arrested 76 individuals in connection to the violence and are looking for 86 others who were likely involved.
