NEW DELHI—The two-story house in the northern India state of Uttar Pradesh was home to Afreen Fatima’s family for more than two decades. The 24-year-old grew up there with her four siblings, whiling away many hours reading in the study that housed their large book collection.

Last month, authorities demolished the home.
