Days after a Hindutva mob killed a 37-year-old Muslim man in Moradabad over allegations of cow slaughter, police on Wednesday arrested his friend, who was with him at the time of the brutal assault. However, no arrests have been made in the murder case.

“We took suo motu cognisance and registered an FIR against Qureshi and Mohammad Adnan (29) for cow slaughter,” The Indian Express quoted Majhola Station House Officer Mohit Chaudhary as saying.

“One FIR was registered on the complaint by his brother, Mohammad Shahjad, under IPC Section 302 (murder) against unidentified people. The second FIR was filed by Majhola police for cow slaughter,” he added.

The Uttar Pradesh Police have yet to make any arrests in the murder case filed against unidentified persons based on the complaint by Mohammad Shahideen Qureshi’s brother.

Qureshi, who had been admitted to the Moradabad district hospital with critical injuries following the attack, succumbed to his injuries at 4:30 PM on Monday.

“As of now, we have not been able to arrest anybody in connection with the killing of Qureshi,” Additional Superintendent of Police Kumar Ran Vijay Singh told the newspaper.
