In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Jharkhand, an imam was lynched by a mob in the early hours of Tuesday. The victim, identified as Maulana Akbar Hussain, was reportedly attacked by a group of people in the town of Dumka.
According to local sources, the incident occurred around 2 AM when Hussain was returning home after leading prayers at a nearby mosque. Eyewitnesses say he was confronted by a mob that accused him of being involved in a theft. Despite his protests, the mob brutally assaulted him. Hussain was later found by passersby and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The local police have launched an investigation into the lynching but have denied any communal angle to the incident. Dumka Superintendent of Police, Rajesh Kumar, stated, “Preliminary investigations suggest that this was a case of mistaken identity related to a theft in the area. There is no evidence to suggest that the attack was motivated by religious animosity.”
The police have detained several individuals for questioning and are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify all those involved in the attack. Kumar emphasized that swift action would be taken against the perpetrators, regardless of the motive behind the crime.
However, the incident has sparked outrage and fear among the local Muslim community, who feel targeted and unsafe. Community leaders have called for a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure justice is served. “This is not an isolated incident,” said Asif Ali, a prominent local activist. “There have been several instances where minorities have been attacked under various pretexts. We demand a fair investigation to uncover the truth.”
