A national conference organised by the Indian Muslims for Civil Rights (IMCR) in New Delhi saw a strong denunciation of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024.

Held at the Ghalib Institute on Mata Sundri Road on Saturday, the event gathered parliamentarians, legal experts, and representatives from various communities, all united in their opposition to the proposed legislation. The Bill was described as a “planned attempt” to seize Waqf properties and a broader threat to the rights of minority groups across India.

AAP MP and member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), Sanjay Singh, addressed the gathering, stressing the gravity of the situation. He labeled the Bill as not only anti-Muslim but also a potential threat to the properties of other minority communities, including Sikhs, Buddhists, and even majority community, Hindus. Singh urged these communities to join forces in what he termed as a “collective struggle” against the Union government’s encroachment on religious properties. “This is a difficult fight, but it is necessary,” he stated. “If we do not unite now, the next targets will be the properties of other minorities.”

Congress MP Naseer Hussain reaffirmed his party’s commitment to opposing the Bill. He noted that the Congress leadership, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, had engaged with the INDIA alliance and other parliamentarians on this issue. Hussain emphasised the importance of maintaining a secular front in this fight and urged all Muslim organisations and communities to come together. He also highlighted the need to counter the misinformation being spread about the Bill.

Maulana Fazlur Raheem Mujaddidi, General Secretary of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, categorically rejected the Bill, calling for its complete withdrawal. He argued that the Bill is a systematic attempt to dispossess Muslims of their Waqf properties and push them further into backwardness. Former Union Minister K. Rahman Khan echoed these concerns, describing the Bill as part of a decade-long conspiracy to weaken the Muslim community.
