Thiruvananthapuram: People may travel to different countries and see new places, but within the four walls of the house, they should speak their own language—not English—wear traditional clothes on festivals and eat traditional food, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said Wednesday.
Inaugurating the ‘Hindu Unity Conference’ Wednesday, which is being held as part of the annual Cherukolpuzha Hindu Convention along the Pampa River in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, Bhagwat said that “Dharma” is the soul of Hinduism and everyone should practice it individually. Every household should gather at least once a week to pray or discuss if their current lifestyle is in line with their tradition and culture, he added.
“Once a week, everyone in the house should come together at a predetermined time… Come together at a certain time, sing bhajan as per our devotion, eat home-cooked food happily and then speak for 3-4 hours on two topics—who are we? What are our traditions? What is our culture? Are we following that in our house?” Bhagwat said.
“Within the four walls of our house, language, clothing, devotion, food and bhavan should be our own. In my house, I will speak Malayalam because it is my mother tongue. I will not speak English. In my house, I will be in my traditional clothing. There are festivals and religious events at home. I will be in my traditional clothes. It is important to discuss these things in the family and help the new generation understand.”
Bhagwat, who was on a two-day visit to Kerala, also launched a book based on Sree Narayana Guru, a spiritual leader and social reformer from Kerala. He had previously visited the state from 16 to 21 January as part of RSS’s organisational activities.
