NEW DEHLI: At Kushal Chowk in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri, the painting of Mahatma Gandhi at Akbar’s paan shop has been replaced by BR Ambedkar’s image. The shop had been demolished in April 2022 during the erstwhile North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s anti-encroachment drive following riots in the area in a manner recalling the “bulldozer justice” in some states that has now been proclaimed illegal by the Supreme Court.

On Thursday, TOI returned to Jahangirpuri’s C Block to see how those affected by the demolitions had those affected by the demolitions had coped in two years. “It took me 6-7 months to fix my shop after the demolition,” said Akbar. “Why was my livelihood snatched away? What was my fault? I had the municipal vending committee’s licence but no one listened to my pleadings. It is good that the Supreme Court has said such acts are illegal.”
