MUMBAI: Days after chief minister Eknath Shinde raked up a fresh controversy over the 800-year-old Haji Malang Dargah in Kalyan with his statement to “liberate” what many Hindus claim is “Malanggad temple”, the shrine’s committee has sought help from Mahim Dargah.
In his letter to Mahim Dargah’s managing trustee Sohail Khandwani, Nasir Khan, chairman of the Pir Haji Malang Saheb Trust, has requested his intervention. “We are reaching out to you to intervene in this matter because you are a devoted follower of Hazrat Haji Abdur Rahman Malang Shah Baba and you have strong ties with higher government authorities,” read the letter.
Khandwani, who is also a trustee at the iconic Haji Ali Dargah, said he would write to Shinde and deputy chief ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar requesting them not to allow this issue to be blown out of proportion. “The matter is in courts. The chief minister and his two deputies are responsible people holding constitutional posts. Sufi shrines follow syncretic traditions and I appeal everyone to maintain peace and harmony,” said Khandwani.
