A group of law students from Delhi University (DU) were reportedly detained by police after staging a protest against the recently passed Waqf Amendment Act. The incident sparked outrage on campus, with students questioning the suppression of their right to peaceful protest.
A video circulating on social media shows a heated exchange between a female student and a Delhi police officer. The student accuses the authorities of bias, stating, “The ABVP (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) gets VIP treatment, but we, as law students, are silenced for raising concerns on critical matters like the Waqf Amendment Act. The police show up in force to stop us.”
Challenging the police presence on campus, she further asked, “Who gave you permission to stop us from protesting? How did you enter the university grounds? Are we committing any illegal or unconstitutional act? Is freedom of thought also being amended now?”
The protest comes amid growing scrutiny of the Waqf Act. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of India heard petitions challenging the validity of the law. During the hearing, the bench questioned the Central government about the exclusionary nature of the Waqf boards.
When Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that many Muslims did not want to be governed by the Act, the court retorted, “Are you suggesting that Muslims will now be allowed on Hindu religious trusts? Say it clearly.”
