Student groups and activists protested outside the Tripura Bhawan in New Delhi against the ongoing anti-Muslim violence in the northeast state unleashed by Hindutva mobs.
Students belong to Fraternity Movement, AISA, SIO, NSUI, CRJD, MSF, KYS, RWPI, and NEFIS, and several activists from the capital city’s citizen collectives were detained by Delhi Police after one hour-long demonstration outside Tripura Bhavan.
“We are detained by Delhi police in front of Tripura Bhavan while protesting against the Hindutva violence in Tripura. Police confiscated our posters which said #Muslimlivesmatter and said it is illegal. So calling for violence against Muslims is legal but dissent is illegal,” said Aysha Renna, national secretary of Fraternity Movement.
The protesters carried the placards “Stop attacking minorities,” “State-sponsored attack on Muslims must end,” and “Tripura CM must resign.”
“We are at Mandir Marg police station now,” Asharudheen, Delhi unit treasurer of MSF told Maktoob. Over two dozen detained protesters were taken to the Mandir Marg police station. Another detainee, Sneha, AISA Delhi unit secretary also confirmed it to Maktoob.
More than 15 mosques and several houses, and shops belonging to Muslims were vandalised and burnt by Hindu paramilitary groups RSS, VHP, and Bajrang Dal across Tripura during week-long protests against Bangladesh violence so far.
Photos and videos accessed by Maktoob show violent right-wing mobs who wear saffron clothes and carry swords raising anti-Muslim slogans during protests organised by Viswa Hindu Parishad, Hindu Jagran Manch, Bajrang Dal, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
“More than two dozen of hate-crimes against Muslims happened across Tripura since last week. The authorities didn’t arrest any culprits,” Safiqur Rahman, an activist associated with Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) Tripura said to Maktoob.
