A Delhi court has ordered the registration of an FIR against award-winning journalist Rana Ayyub based on a complaint by a right-wing lawyer, alleging that her social media posts “insulted Hindu deities” and “spread anti-India sentiment.”
The court stated that prima facie, cognizable offences were made out against her, Live Law reported.
The complaint was filed by Amita Sachdeva, an advocate associated with Hindu right wing groups.
Chief judicial magistrate Himanshu Raman Singh, in his Jan 25 order, noted the gravity of the allegations and said it was expedient to order an investigation into the matter.
The court directed the station house officer (SHO) of South Delhi’s cyber police station to convert the complaint into an FIR. It also instructed them to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The case has been scheduled for Tuesday for a compliance report.
The Delhi Police has complied with the Court’s order and registered FIR No. 0003/2025 dated 27/01/2025 under Sections 505, 295A, and 153A of the IPC at Cyber Police Station South, New Delhi, claimed the lawyer in a post on X.
