Trichy: Dalits of a village in Gandharvakottai in Pudukottai district have complained that their drinking water overhead tank (OHT) was contaminated with ‘cow dung’ by someone. The incident comes more than a year after human feces were found in the OHT of a dalit colony in Vengaivayal in the district and the perpetrators were yet to be identified.
It was P Murugesan, a resident of the adi dravidar colony in Kuruvandan theru hamlet of Sangam Viduthi panchayat, who brought the issue to the notice of Gandharvakottai block development officer (BDO) P Periyasamy after foul smell emanated from the water being supplied from the 10,000-litre capacity OH .
The villagers checked the OHT and found cow dung in it.
Govt officials and police led by DSP G Ragavi arrived in the village and deployed personnel there for security. The BDO and team collected water samples from residents and sent them for laboratory tests. In his letter to Pudukottai district collector I S Mercy Ramya, the BDO said the OHT supplied drinking water to 35 houses of dalits and 10 houses of kallar community in the hamlet. The team pumped out the water and sanitized the OHT with bleaching powder. The OHT is not being used and drinking water is being supplied to residents through water tanker trucks.
