BHOPAL: A Dalit youth was stripped naked at gunpoint, singed with cigarettes and thrashed by a group of youths in MP’s Chhatarpur city last Sunday. Police took action four days later when a video of the horrific crime went around on social media.

Three suspects — Deva Thakur, Annu Ghoshi, and Lucky Ghoshi — were arrested on Wednesday and paraded through the streets, having to shout, ‘committing crime is a sin’ and ‘the law is our father’.

The Dalit was assaulted near Sarani Darwaza on the outskirts of Chhatarpur, around 435km from Bhopal. The deeply-disturbing video shows four men assaulting the young man, pointing a pistol at him, stripping him, and burning him with cigarettes.

He was also kicked, punched and whipped with a belt while one of the attackers recorded the torture. City Kotwali police station filed a case on the basis of the video and began identifying the accused.

ADG-intelligence Jaideep Prasad said all those involved in the case have been arrested and a countrymade pistol and sharp weapons seized from them. During interrogation, the accused admitted to beating the youth due to an old rivalry.
