AGRA: A 20-year-old Dalit man, who was detained at a police station for a week following a complaint by the village head for abducting his teenage daughter, died at a hospital in Aligarh on Wednesday. After a preliminary probe, the SHO and a sub-inspector (SI) were removed from the police station. Police said Gaurav Jatav tried to hang himself with a muffler inside the washroom in Amapur police chowki, although his family claimed “torture by cops”.

The deceased hailed from Rasul Sulhapur village in Aligarh district.

Speaking about the matter, DSP Shahida Nasrin told TOI, “A departmental probe is being conducted. We’re waiting for the report’s outcome.” A senior cop, privy to the details, added, “There were deep marks around the man’s neck. A postmortem was conducted and its report will make things more clear.”
