Dalit lynched over motor ‘theft’ in Haryana’s Hisar village

Hisar DC and DIG seek details from the victim’s kin at a hospital

HISAR: A 38-year-old dalit man was allegedly beaten to death and two of his relatives were injured by villagers over the alleged theft of an electric battery, inverter and motor from their field in Mirkan village of Hisar district on Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Vinod. His brother Sandeep and his cousin Bhal Singh have been hospitalized.

The relatives of the deceased youth have refused to take his body till all the accused are arrested. Hisar deputy commissioner Priyanka Soni and DIG Balwan Singh met the family members of the deceased at Maharaja Agrasen civil hospital and assured them that a job at DC rate as well as financial assistance will be provided to the kin. After speaking to the injured, Bhal Singh and Sandeep, they announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Social organizations have started an indefinite dharna at the hospital along with the victims’ family members.
The case was registered against brothers Sandeep Saharan and Sunil Saharan, besides Golu, Deep, Sanjay, Vijay and fourfive unknown persons under Section 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (common object of unlawful assembly), 302 (murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement), 367 (abducting in order to subject person to grievous hurt, slavery, etc), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Sandeep stated in his complaint that on Tuesday morning he had gone to the house of Mahendra Godara on daily wages. Sandeep and Vijay took him to the field on a motorcycle along with his cousin Bhal Singh and then got his cousin Vinod there.

“Sandeep, Sunil, Golu, Deepa, Sanjay, Vijay and four-five others started beating the three of us with sticks, and kicking us, alleging that we had made off with an electric motor, inverter and battery from their farm. Some time later, Vinod’s brother Sunil also reached there. Then, all them started beating Vinod,” he said. The victim’s brother said Vinod died on the way to the hospital.

DIG Balwan Singh Rana said that two of the accused have been arrested and police teams are trying to nab the remaining. To ensure safety of the relatives and family members of the deceased, three DSPs have been deployed there, the DIG said.

The DC said that the district administration has made elaborate arrangements to thwart any untoward incident.

‘Won’t perform last rites till arrest of accused’

Advocate Rajat Kalsan, president of the national alliance for dalit human rights, who was on dharna, said the postmortem had been done, but the family members had clearly stated that they would not perform the last rites until all the accused are arrested. He said the police got information about the incident at 9 am but reached athe site t 3 pm when the accused had absconded, so the family members of the deceased have no faith in the Hisar cops.
