AGRA: A Dalit groom, 25, and several ‘baraatis’ were attacked with rods and sticks and insulted with casteist slurs allegedly by a group of upper caste men during a wedding procession at a village under Khatauli limits in Muzaffarnagar district on Monday. The groom, Amrit Kumar, was forced to dismount from a horse and humiliated, his family said. Police charged some assailants for “rioting” under sections of the new criminal laws.

Kumar said his family and other guests — part of the ‘baraat’ — were dancing to the DJ’s music when suddenly some people turned up and asked the wedding organisers to stop playing the songs.

Kumar added: “When ‘baraatis’ rejected their demand, they were assaulted. Some ‘baraatis’, including my brother, Ajay Kumar, sustained injuries and we filed a police complaint.” DSP, Khatauli, Ramashish Yadav, said, “The incident took place at Madhkarimpur when the ‘baraat’ was passing through the village. Objections were raised by some men of another caste about a song being played by the DJ.”
He added, “A heated argument ensued which led to a scuffle in which three people were injured.”
