Dalit family beaten in Kheda village for taking out procession (Times of India)

Ahmedabad: Three members of a Dalit family from Nadiad’s Hathnoli village were allegedly assaulted by five men from the Thakor community on Sunday for taking out a procession.

The complainant, Bhavesh Vaghela, a member of the village’s scheduled caste (SC) community, stated in his FIR that the procession was taken out to celebrate the tonsuring of his cousin Vivek’s son.

During the procession, Dharmesh Parmar, Kishan Parmar and their aides from the same village, allegedly used abusive language against Bhavesh and his family. Bhavesh told police that he did not respond as he wanted the event to conclude peacefully.

Later that evening, Bhavesh, driving to the market with his cousin Komal, was stopped by Dharmesh and his aides. They allegedly objected to Bhavesh, a SC man, driving a car and then used caste-based slurs. Bhavesh was assaulted for objecting and so was Komal. His other cousin, Vivek, who rushed to the spot, too was attacked with sticks. The accused also damaged Bhavesh’ car with sticks and stones and threatened him with dire consequences if he took out procession.
