Crimes against SC, ST rose from 2018 to 2020, govt tells Lok Sabha

Cases of crime against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes increased from 2018 to 2020, shows a report submitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs in Lok Sabha.

Crimes against Scheduled Castes increased by 17.52%, while cases against Scheduled Tribes hiked by 26.71%.

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra submitted the figures in response to a question by Congress MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and Telangana Rashtra Samithi MP Manne Srinivas Reddy.

42,793 crimes against Scheduled Castes were recorded in 2018, 45,961 in 2019 and 50,291 in 2020.

During the period, 6,528 crimes were reported against Scheduled Tribes in 2018, 7,570 in 2019 and 8,272 in 2020.

As per information furnished by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, the State Governments of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Telangana and UT of Andaman & Nicobar Islands have identified the atrocity prone areas, says the report.
