The Bengaluru police have arrested a 30-year-old man, Syed Nasru, for allegedly mutilating three cows in the city’s Chamrajpete. The Cottonpet police confirmed that Syed, a native of Champaran district in Bihar, injured the udders and legs of the animals in an inebriated state.

The accused has been remanded to judicial custody until January 24.

The incident came to light early on Sunday, January 12, when G Karna, the owner of the cows, went to milk them. In his complaint, Karna stated that he owns eight cows, of which four are tied near his house and four behind the Dandumariyamma temple.

A neighbour alerted him to the injuries on the cows tied near the temple. Upon inspecting the site, Karna discovered that three of the animals had sustained serious injuries.

The injured cows were taken to the Mysore Road Veterinary Hospital for treatment. Following Karna’s complaint, an FIR was registered under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to killing or maiming animals.

Police investigations suggest no involvement of any accomplices. Syed Nasru works as a helper in a plastic and cloth bag stitching shop located 50 meters from the site of the incident.

The incident sparked widespread outrage and political controversy, with the Opposition BJP accusing the Congress government of appeasing Muslims. Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka called it an attempt to create a “mini-Pakistan.” BJP state president BY Vijayendra demanded strict action from CM Siddaramaiah, while Sri Rama Sene’s Pramod Muthalik warned about protests. Meanwhile, Home Minister G Parameshwara assured a thorough investigation into the case.
