An order by Muzaffarnagar Police asking eateries, including roadside carts, along the route of the Kanwar Yatra to display names of owners or proprietors to “avoid any confusion” is facing backlash on social media. Activists and critics have called the move an attempt to discriminate against Muslim businesses.

Defending the direction, Senior Superintendent of Police of Muzaffarnagar, Abhishek Singh said it is being done to ensure that there’s no confusion among the kanwarias and no allegations are raised in the future, leading to a law and order situation.

“Everyone is following this of their own free will,” he said in a press meet.

Sharing the post by the former chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission Zafarul-Islam Khan, Congress leader Pawan Khera called the move “state sponsored bigotry”.

“Not just political parties, all right thinking people and the media must rise against this state sponsored bigotry. We cannot allow the bjp to push the country back into dark ages,” Khera wrote on X.
