A group of suspended students from Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) held a press conference at the Press Club of India on February 16, condemning what they called a “brutal crackdown” by the university administration and Delhi Police.

The students, many of whom belong to various student organizations, had been suspended for participating in protests on campus. They gathered under the banner of United Students of Jamia to demand justice and reinstatement.

Speaking to Maktoob, the students accused the Jamia administration of using excessive force and intimidation to suppress dissent. They highlighted the events of February 13, 2024, when several students were allegedly detained during a pre-dawn crackdown at the university’s Central Canteen protest site.

Habeeba, a first-year BA Persian student and one of the suspended students, told Maktoob about the ordeal, alleging that Delhi Police and university officials forcibly removed them from the site.

“At 5:00 AM on February 13, police and security guards dragged us out of our sleeping spaces. At the police station, they threatened us. A sub-inspector of Jamia Nagar Police Station even slapped me just because I hid my phone. They confiscated our phones without any order or FIR,” she said.
