Stone-pelting during a religious procession resulted in a communal clash in Bihar’s Jamui district, after which authorities suspended internet services for 48 hours.
Several people were injured, including Jamui Nagar Parishad deputy chairman Nitish Sah, in Sunday’s clash at Baluadih village. On Monday, eight people were arrested.
Jamui police said the incident took place under the jurisdiction of Jhajha police station at around 4.30 pm on Sunday, when a group of 30 people were returning in a procession from a temple. Half a dozen police personnel had been moving along with the procession, but despite that, stone-pelting and a clash broke out.
Jamui Nagar Parishad deputy chairman Nitish Sah was admitted to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) with a serious injury. Five others suffered minor injuries in the incident.
Jamui District Magistrate Abhilasha Sharma said, “We have suspended internet services for 48 hours as a precautionary measure. Additional forces have been deployed at Baluadih, with senior police officers camping at the spot.”
Jamui Superintendent of Police Madan Kumar Anand said two FIRs were registered. One FIR, filed on the basis of a complaint from local residents, named 41 people. Eight of them have been arrested.
