Tensions escalated in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, as members of the Bajrang Dal mobilized locals to protest against the construction of a mosque on Friday, July 5. The protesters voiced objections to the mosque’s construction, alleging concerns about “love jihad,” cattle slaughter, and illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the area.
According to reports, Bajrang Dal members gathered a crowd and staged a demonstration near the mosque’s construction site. They raised slogans against the ongoing construction and threatened the district administration, demanding the demolition of part of the mosque under construction. They warned of initiating mass agitation that could disrupt communal harmony in the region if their demands were unmet.
Recent incidents in the BJP-ruled state of Chhattisgarh have seen a worrying increase in targeted attacks, particularly against Muslims and Christians. Mob lynching incidents and assaults, often perpetrated by right-wing Hindu groups, have instilled fear and insecurity within these communities.
