Aliya Assadi, one of the leaders of Karnataka’s historic agitation of Muslim students against hijab ban in educational institutions, accused the media of barging into her home and harassing her.

“What I’m seeing today is that most of them have forgotten the media ethics. Asianet Suvarna News has just crossed it’s limits by entering my home forcefully to harass with hidden cameras,” Aliya, a student of Government PU College Udupi tweeted.

Aliya said those who have media ethics should remember the word “privacy.”

Aliya also urged Karnataka state police chief to take action against the media witch hunt.

“Since the college leaked our private details, we got abusive calls from unknown numbers at the beginning and now they’re entering homes forcefully and harrassing us. Trying all the ways to let us down. Stop this cheap works and be a gentleman,” she said.

17-year-old Aliya Assadi last week alleged that the addresses and mobile numbers of protesting Muslim girls were leaked from the college.

She said her personal details – including phone numbers, parents’ names, and home address – were shared on Whatsapp groups buzzing in Udupi.

Aliya and other five Muslim students demanded the college management to explain how confidential details reached the public.

The chairman of the College’s Development Committee (CDC) is Udupi’s BJP MLA Raghupathi Bhat and he has been maintaining his Islamophobic stand since December 2021 that Muslim students in hijab are not allowed inside classrooms.

“He made our fight for hijab communal in nature, by supporting the saffron scarf protests. He instigated the students to wear saffron shawls. And now he has made, not just the college, but also our homes unsafe,” Aliya earlier said to The Quint.
