The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has announced a significant protest at Jantar Mantar on March 10, opposing the contentious Waqf Amendment Bill. This demonstration coincides with the anticipated tabling of the bill in Parliament during its upcoming session.
Prior to the main event in Delhi, the AIMPLB has scheduled protests in Patna and Vijayawada on March 7. Dr. Syed Qasim Rasool Ilyas, spokesperson for the AIMPLB, emphasised that the board, alongside various Muslim organizations and the broader Muslim community, has consistently voiced concerns to the central government and the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). They argue that the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill threatens the integrity of Waqf properties and should be retracted. Despite these objections, the government appears unresponsive.
Dr. Ilyas stated, “Now that the government is planning to present the bill in Parliament, the board’s executive committee has decided to hold a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar in front of Parliament on March 10 to awaken the conscience of the government and political parties and register their protest.”
He further called upon all opposition parties and civil society movements to join this demonstration against perceived injustices.
The protest is expected to see participation from leaders representing Dalits, Adivasis, OBCs, and religious figures from the Sikh and Christian communities.
The AIMPLB has also expressed dissatisfaction with mainstream media narratives, asserting that Waqf properties, originally personal assets donated by Muslim ancestors for religious and charitable purposes, are being misrepresented.
