Srinagar: Narrow lanes with checkpoints all over in Srinagar’s Jawahar Nagar area lead to Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) only elected representative in Kashmir – Aijaz Hussain’s residence. The saffron leader had bagged the Khonmoh-II District Development Council seat in Srinagar when the lotus bloomed in Kashmir for the first time. Sitting in his wood-panelled cosy room where he usually receives his guests, Aijaz is all smiles. He is just back from a party function where hundreds have pledged their support to the BJP for the upcoming Assembly elections.

The young leader has helped the BJP make inroads in Khanmoh, an area that was traditionally held by the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He says this is not the end as he eyes the Lal Chowk constituency for upcoming polls. “People of Kashmir have realised that those who ruled them over the past 70 years did nothing for people and instead filled their own coffers for their petty political interests,” he says.

On Saturday, hundreds in a convention held in Khonmoh pledged their support to the DDC person. Aijaz Hussain while addressing the audience said that he was glad to see young and energetic youth joining the party besides prominent personalities. The BJP will be in double digits comfortably in the next Assembly polls. He assured locals that the party will leave no stone unturned to change the developmental situation of Srinagar.
