GUWAHATI: The anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) movement, which fizzled out with the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, is gathering steam in the northeast once again.

After the North East Students’ Organisation (Neso), the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Raijor Dal on Thursday gave a clarion to the people from the region to oppose “Centre’s move to implement CAA”. West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari recently said Amit Shah suggested that the rules for CAA that seeks to give citizenship to migrants from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, could be framed once the Covid booster dose vaccination is over.

Neso’s constituent body, All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu), along with Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and KMSS spearheaded the movement in Assam earlier. AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai said, “We are firm on our stand. We will not allow the CAA to be implemented in Assam. AJYCP is giving a call to the people of Assam and northeast for a renewed agitation against CAA.”
